BOARDING PROGRAMS
Broadwater Academy has accepted students from all over the world for more than a decade. Our students have benefited from the diversity provided by students from countries such as Greece, France, Germany, Holland, Russia, and most recently, China and South Korea.
We believe that only by living next to the longest stretch of undeveloped shoreline on the Atlantic coast can one develop an appreciation for the unparalleled interconnectedness of the Eastern Shore’s over 56,000 protected acres of beaches, wetlands, estuaries, coastlines, and salt marshes. As a boarding student, you will have an opportunity to live with your classmates and experience our pastoral setting.

Weekends
You will have much more free time during the weekends. Trips to Virginia Beach and Norfolk, VA are frequent. While some activities are not possible during the pandemic, when it is permitted and safe, other field trips to museums, performances, shopping, sports games, as well as weekend trips to Baltimore, Philadelphia or camping in the mountains of Western Virginia are all possible activities.
Residence
Boarding students at Broadwater Academy live in a large residential house off-campus with an experienced host parent. Meals are provided and home-cooked by the host parent or brought in by local caterers and restaurants. The house features large, open common areas with a television and piano, spacious bedrooms, multiple bathrooms, and an expansive backyard for outdoor activities. Housing is guaranteed for nine months of the academic year, and students are required to leave the residence over the school’s winter, spring, and summer breaks.
Location
Our bucolic setting allows for a quiet, clear, rural, peaceful place for focus/study. The urban centers of Norfolk, Virginia less than an hour away, or Washington, D.C. four hours away, provide access to strong metropolitan experience.
Weather
One of the wonderful aspects of life on Virginia’s Eastern Shore is our temperate climate. The waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean moderate the weather and create a microclimate that provides the Eastern Shore with temperate springs and autumns. In winter, nights seldom fall below freezing, and daytime winter temperatures often reach 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Transportation
Students may ride the bus to school, and a private Broadwater van driven by the host parent takes the boarding students to and from the school less than five minutes away, and also to venues such as the mall and movie theaters.
Domestic Boarding
Broadwater is focused on developing our domestic boarding program to give students the opportunity to embrace learning through the breadth and depth of opportunities provided by being on the Eastern Shore. From partnerships with university research facilities to NASA to national conservation associations, our students are exposed to unprecedented experiences with world-class facilities which appreciate the unique treasure that is the Eastern Shore.
International Boarding
We are committed to maintaining and expanding this program so that we may provide Broadwater students with a global study of history, culture, and traditions while preparing our international students for further study in the United States and instilling a lifelong love of learning.
