Middle School

At Broadwater, the middle grades (Grade Five through Eight) are viewed as the foundation that provides its students with the skills necessary to succeed in a demanding college preparatory program. The middle grade period is a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development, and it requires a program that helps students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as learning facts. While emphasizing developmental needs, our students are enrolled in a comprehensive program of study that includes core academic classes, an introductory fine arts curriculum, a comprehensive technology curriculum, foreign language, health and physical education, and the development of good organizational and study skills. These course offerings are required of all our middle grade students, as it is important for all students to share a common base of information and skills needed to achieve success in the Upper School.

An intramural and interscholastic athletic program provides opportunities for students to acquire skills and experience team play. Organizations, including academic and service clubs, student publications, musical/theatrical groups and student government, provide additional opportunities for student involvement.
